A Journey Towards Efficient Software Profiling: Challenges and Solutions
Abstract
Have you ever spent a whole day profiling your application or tool, trying to identify the cause of a recent performance regression reported by your users? Or maybe you have attempted to optimize your tool’s performance for academic software competitions? If so, then you have likely suffered from the significant time overhead incurred by typical software profilers, and you may have wondered if there is a more efficient approach. We believe there is.
In this talk, we will introduce our research focused on developing efficient software profiling that maintains sufficient precision, and we will discuss the many challenges that must be overcome to achieve this goal. We will also present our prototype tool, Perun, which we use to implement and evaluate our research ideas and experimental profilers.
